Listed below are some popular remote access tools and platforms:
Small Business Server Remote Web Workplace: or more commonly referred to as SBS RWW. Most businesses that are running SBS 2003/2008/2011 are not fully aware of this capability. It essentially extends the server functionality to allow users to remotely connect to their workstations. The largest benefits of this tool include:
Free cost (provided you already own the platform).Seamless integration with Windows server, as it uses the same network login information (less management hassles and one less password to track), and security – thanks to the ability to install security certificates.
LogMeIn: this is by far one of the best web-based remote access tools. And to top it off it comes with a free edition (although limited to 3 computers only). It offers an excellent user experience with virtually no lagging and great graphic rendering. The premium edition offers additional features, such as file transfer and other good management functions such as remote reboot. It is also very secure with its 256 bits encryption capability.
TeamViewer: is a great remote access software and so much more. It offers online meeting capabilities and a host of other neat features, including Remote Control (user-initiated remote access). It has excellent mobile applications and can be customized to accommodate many needs. As opposed to LogMeIn’s recurring cost, TeamViewer has a one-time license cost.
UltraVNC: this open source remote access software is a much improved version from the original VNC. It has better graphics performance and is generally faster. It also comes with a simple file transfer function, but it does not support encryption. It involves a somehow difficult setup that involves installing software at each node and opening ports on the router.
GoToMyPC: the last item on this list is GoToMyPC. This is a commercial solution that is very similar to LogMeIn. They do not offer a free edition and have the basic remote access features, such as file transfer and printing.
